A Keyboard, Transplanting Kale, and a Nice Dinner

On Monday, Aaron and Chris picked up a bunch of crops to transplant into the ground. Kale, broccoli, and cabbage were among the transplants. There were different varieties of each and other types of vegetables belonging to the Brassicaceae family.

Basically, we spent the first part of the week getting them into the ground. What bed row which plant went in was crucial to their success. Also, the distance between plants and the number of rows of plants within each bed was considered. I guess what I’m trying to say is that it isn’t as simple as throwing a plant into the soil and then you magically get a good crop; there’s a lot of planning and preparation for the potential of a good crop.

Matt finally left the farm. And of course, he didn’t even finish transplanting all the plants. Classic Matt: always leaving before the job’s done. But in all seriousness, it was really great having him around. I plan on seeing him in Switzerland within the next year. He also said I could maybe practice with his soccer team to get a taste of “European” soccer. Whatever that means.

I woke up last Sunday humming one of my favorite piano pieces, Avril 14th by Aphex Twin. It’s quite brief, nevertheless, it is held close to my heart. Then, humming it, I realized I wanted to play this song myself. So, I looked online to see if anyone was selling a keyboard nearby, and low and behold someone was. I met him at the Walmart parking lot and left with an old-school Yamaha keyboard.

I’m currently trying to practice for about an hour a day. I’m starting out with the basics of the basics; chords, pitch, note reading, etc. Basically, everything I should’ve paid attention to in 5th grade music class. It’s definitely a NEW skill – I can’t really rely on other knowledge or skills I knew prior. This is something entirely different to me. Of course, the task is more challenging because of that, but I will prevail!

To celebrate my grandmother’s birthday, we hit the hottest restaurant in Seneca; Vangelis. I was definitely under-dressed as I was the only one in the restaurant with jeans on. But, what was I to do, that’s all I brought down with me. Anyways, everything from the ambiance of the place, the food, the presentation, everything was stellar. It was a real nice way to celebrate. I got to meet some friends of my grandparents, which I’ve said a million times before because they just find friends wherever they go I guess. The steak risotto (it was something like that) on the menu caught my eye, so I got that. It came out looking like stroganoff. The plate was garnished with thin potato strings that gave the dish a satisfying crunch. As if the dinner didn’t satisfy us enough, we splurged and got an expresso creme brulee to accompany our French press coffee. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking: How can such a modest man live so lavishly? Well, I’ll explain how in a future post.
